Duties and Responsibilities: Acupuncture regulations vary state by state, according to the national certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) (www.nccaom.org). Most states have licensing or continuing education requirements, including certification by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Seven states (Alabama, Delaware, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota) allow only medical doctors, osteopaths and chiropractors to perform acupuncture, while at least two states (Louisiana and Michigan) require acupuncture professionals to treat patients under the supervision of doctors or osteopaths.

Not many careers boast such a varied professional landscape, but this variety is just one of the many appeals of becoming a sports doctor.

Education: Many students who are interested in going on to medical school complete a bachelor’s degree with a pre-med concentration that gives them a solid foundation in biology, chemistry and physics. Speech, language, and swallowing disorders result from a variety of causes, such as a stoke, brain injury, hearing loss, development delay, a cleft palate, cerebral palsy, emotional problems.

Respiratory Therapy technician

Duties and Responsibilities: Respiratory therapy technicians are also called respiratory therapy assistants, respiratory care assistants or respiratory therapist assistants. They assist respiratory therapists (RT) and doctors to provide medical treatment to people that have breathing and cardiopulmonary problems such as asthma or emphysema. They can also provide medical aid under the direction of RT’s to people suffering from shock, heart attack and drowning as well as adults that have lungs problems or babies with undeveloped lungs. The on-the-job training includes taking part in examinations, administering treatments and therapy, and providing nursing care for patients suffering from breathing and cardiopulmonary difficulties. Respiratory therapy technicians are employed by hospitals and nursing homes, and at respiratory therapy offices and clinics. Most of the positions are part time, to accommodate students’ class schedules, though some full-time positions are available.

Thoracic Surgeon
Duties and Responsibilities: The American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) maintains standards for the practice of thoracic surgery in the public interest. Thoracic surgeons who have completed approved residency training, hold a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, and maintain an ethical standing in the profession are eligible for board certification. Candidates must then pass both a written examination that is designed to test a broad range of knowledge in all areas of thoracic surgery. Upon successful completion of the written examination, candidates are eligible for and must pass an oral examination that tests knowledge, judgment and the integration of these skills in clinical practice.
Salary: $100,00 - $400,000
Education: All thoracic surgeons have the same general training and are certified by the same specialty board, except for congenital heart surgeons who have a sub-specialty certificate in addition to the ABTS certification. Some surgeons choose to focus their clinical practice in certain areas of thoracic surgery and can be referred to differently. A cardiac or cardiovascular surgeon will focus on the heart and great vessels. General thoracic surgeons treat diseases of the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, and mediastinum. Congenital heart surgeons operate on infants and children with heart disease. Cardiothoracic surgeon is the most inclusive term used to describe the specialty, irrespective of a particular surgeon’s area of focus and expertise, and can be used interchangeably with the term thoracic surgeon.
